A driver is accused of striking a motorcyclist near the Emerald Queen Casino in Fife early Sunday morning.

Officers were called around 1:49 a.m. to the 5600 block of Pacific Highway for the incident. A woman driving an SUV was turning left into the casino when she struck the motorcycle. She claimed she did not see the man, Fife Police Department assistant chief of police David Claridge told The News Tribune Monday.

The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet that was not strapped. It fell off during the crash, and he suffered a head injury, Claridge said. The motorcyclist was taken to a local hospital with significant head trauma that was not considered life-threatening. He did not have an update Monday morning on the motorcyclist’s condition.

The woman did not show signs of intoxication, he said. A Drug Recognition Expert was called to the scene and they did an evaluation. Based on the DRE evaluation, the woman was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault and booked in the Pierce County Jail.

Claridge said she was not arrested for DUI because they needed to perform a blood draw.
