Police have arrested a man fired upon by Pierce County sheriff’s deputies during an incident Sunday.

According to a news release from the Lakewood Police Department, officers found the man – 23-year-old Skyler Cantrell – at about 12:30 p.m. Monday in the 900 block of 75th Ave Court East in Tacoma.

South Sound Gang Task Force members went to the location after “receiv[ing] information on a possible location of Cantrell,” the release said.

“He was transported to a local hospital for treatment, where he is currently under law enforcement guard,” the release said. “... Once Cantrell is deemed healthy enough he will be transported to Pierce County Jail for booking.”

The search for Cantrell started Sunday at 2 a.m. when a sheriff’s deputy found him slumped over in a vehicle near 72nd Street East and 9th Avenue Court East, The News Tribune previously reported. Cantrell was being sought at that time on “multiple felony warrants, to include assault 2nd degree, eluding, and escape from community custody,” according to a previous news release from the Lakewood Police Department.

Officers positioned their vehicles around Cantrell’s car while he was sleeping, the release said, to prevent him from escaping. Cantrell woke up and began ramming vehicles until he found an escape route and allegedly drove at a deputy.

“Shots were reported to have been fired. No deputies were hit by gunfire, and the suspect continued to flee. A few minutes later, the suspect vehicle was located, crashed, running, and abandoned at a home in the 900 block of 85th St. E,” the release said. “Multiple calls came in from nearby residences stating a male had shown up on their property asking for help and appeared to have blood on him. It was also reported that a male matching the description of our suspect, had entered homes and left after being confronted.”

Police urged people Sunday to keep their houses and doors locked, and to keep their eyes peeled for Cantrell.

In the Monday release, the Lakewood Police Department said they will be “attempting further interviews” and will continue to investigate the case.
