A Tacoma resident is nursing minor injuries after a house fire Monday night.

According to an X post from Tacoma Fire, the fire happened in the 5800 block of South Montgomery Street at about 5:21 p.m.

“Crews arrived, saw smoke coming from the home, checked for occupants & had the fire under control within 7 minutes,” the post said. “Homeowner was evaluated for minor injuries on scene, but not transported.”

One dog died in the fire, the post said.

“In the preliminary investigation report, the fire on S. Montgomery St was ruled as unintentional, and the ignition source is undetermined. The fire appears to have started in a living room at the front of the house,” Chelsea Shepherd, spokesperson for Tacoma Fire, wrote in an email to The News Tribune. “There were several potential ignition sources, and there was a space heater in that area plugged into an extension cord.”

In a news release, the American Red Cross said its Disaster Action Team volunteers responded to the fire to offer emergency assistance.

“Our volunteers can help with shelter and other immediate needs,” the release said. “On average, the American Red Cross, Northwest Region responds to an emergency like this every 6 hours. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free of charge.”

Shepherd said residents should plug appliances like space heaters directly into the wall outlet and keep flammable objects at least three feet away items like space heaters, wall heaters and fireplaces.
