The Tacoma Police Department evacuated a store on Tuesday after an employee found a hand grenade.

Officer Shelbie Boyd, spokesperson for TPD, told The News Tribune in an email Wednesday morning that officers responded to a call at the Goodwill at 5401 6th Ave. at 1:06 p.m. after the employee found the grenade.

“[It] was left at the location by an unknown person in a donation sorting bin,” Boyd wrote. “Tacoma Police {Explosive Ordinance Disposal] team responded and were directed to where the grenade had been found. The business was evacuated for safety reasons.”

Police later determined the grenade was “inoperable and safe,” Boyd wrote.

“The officer secured the grenade and notified store employees that the business was safe to reenter,” Boyd wrote.
