A man died Wednesday morning after crashing into a tree in Tacoma.

Shelbie Boyd, spokesperson for the Tacoma Police Department, said in an email to The News Tribune the crash happened in the 7400 block of South Oakes Street. Officers were called to the scene at about 4:45 a.m.

Boyd told The News Tribune the man was in his 40s.

The driver was “traveling at a high rate of speed” while going south, left the roadway and struck the tree, Boyd wrote.

No other vehicles were involved, Boyd said.

The News Tribune asked Boyd how fast he was driving and if there were drugs or alcohol involved. She said this incident is still under investigation.
