Police are investigating after an incident in Steilacoom on Friday led to shots fired, a dead dog and a lockdown at a nearby high school.

According to a Facebook post from the Steilacoom Department of Public Safety, police responded to a call at 6:48 a.m. Friday morning near the area of Pickett Street and Heath Court.

Officers contacted the Steilacoom Historical School District, the post said, and arranged a lockdown of nearby Steilacoom High School, which included diverting school buses away that were traveling to campus.

“While investigation continues, there is no immediate ongoing public threat,” the post said. “Initial reports indicated the incident was a fight between two dogs within a roadway, during which the dog owners became involved, and ultimately one dog was shot multiple times and is deceased.”

Police lifted the lockdown once they had secured the scene, the release said.

The News Tribune reached out to Steilacoom High School to ask what times the lockdown started and ended, where the buses went after being diverted, and if school started late due to the lockdown. A staff member at the high school redirected The News Tribune to the Steilacoom Historical School District, and The News Tribune did not receive an immediate response.
