A teenage suspect is in custody after reports of shots fired outside Gray Middle School sent the school into a modified lockdown Wednesday, Shelbie Boyd, spokesperson for the Tacoma Police Department, told The News Tribune.

Police were dispatched near the school at South 62nd Street and South Tyler Street for reports of shots fired at 5:22 a.m., Boyd said.

Officers did an area check but didn’t find any suspects or suspicious activity.

Then at 9:17 a.m., police returned to the school for reports of a video showing a teenager firing a gun at the building. The person in the video was a former student of Gray Middle School who was expelled a few months ago, Boyd said.

The school remained in session and went into a modified lockdown, which is when classes go on as normal but no one is allowed in or out of the building. Officers remained in the school’s area in case the suspect came back.

Tacoma Police searched multiple locations across the county, and eventually found the suspect at the 3800 block of South 66th Street.

After a brief pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody around 10:53 a.m., Boyd said.

The teenager will be booked into Remann Hall on suspicion of felony harassment, unlawful discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm and first degree malicious mischief charges.
