Deliveryman charged in theft of $16,000 in coins from Tacoma jewelry store

A FedEx deliveryman has pleaded not guilty to first-degree theft after authorities accused him of stealing two boxes containing silver coins worth $16,000.

Pierce County prosecutors charged the 36-year-old man Friday. After his arraignment, he was released on his own recognizance.

The two packages containing silver coins were mailed to a Tacoma jewelry store.

The driver tasked with delivering them called his boss July 8 to say the jewelry store had moved but that he’d take them to the new address.

GPS in the delivery truck shows the driver never went to the store, court records show.

“The packages were never delivered to the jewelry store, and they were never checked back in the FedEx warehouse,” according to charging papers. “Shortly after this, the defendant quit his job.”
