Police: 17-year-old arrested after 13-year-old shot in face on JBLM grounds

A 17-year-old has been arrested after a 13-year-old boy was shot in the face Tuesday in a wooded area of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, according to Lakewood police.

The boy was taken to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital for treatment, and remained in critical condition Wednesday, police spokesman John Unfred said.

Police believe the shooting was accidental, he said.

Three boys — 13, 14, and 17 — sneaked onto a wooded area of JBLM with a handgun and the weapon went off, wounding the youngest boy in the face, Unfred said.

The handgun was recovered at the scene. No other individuals were involved.

Police arrested the 17-year-old boy on suspicion of the shooting, and for being a felon in possession of a firearm and on a separate warrant for possession of a deadly weapon, Unfred said. He didn’t know what the prior felony conviction was for.
