Inert artillery shell found against light pole in Tacoma

Some homes were evacuated after an artillery shell was found leaning against a utility pole Friday in Tacoma, according to police.

After it was discovered about 2 p.m. near South Cheyenne Street and South Grove Place, Joint Base Lewis-McChord responded and determined it was inert, Tacoma police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The investigation took about two hours.

Cool said the shell was missing parts, and it’s not clear where it came from or who put it there.
