A Joint Base Lewis-McChord solider suspected of shooting a man in Tillicum on Thursday surrendered to authorities and was expected to appear in Pierce County Superior Court on Monday.

The 22-year-old active-duty soldier was arrested about 8:35 p.m. Thursday at a house in the 15200 block of Fern Street Southwest, Lakewood police reported.

He was booked into the Pierce County Jail for investigation of first-degree assault, three counts of second-degree assault, theft of a firearm, attempted burglary, three counts of first-degree robbery and one count of impersonating a police officer, jail records show.

He was being held without bail.

The News Tribune is not reporting his name at this time because he has not be formally charged.

Police believe he shot a man about 10:10 a.m. in the 15100 block of Grant Avenue Southwest before fleeing into the surrounding neighborhood.

The victim, who was in his pickup when attacked, drove to a nearby fast-food restaurant where help was summoned. A motive has not been disclosed. The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Witnesses told police the alleged gunman later tried to break into several homes and attempted to steal at least two cars in the Tillicum area, prompting a large police response.

He eventually went to the home on Fern Street and told the residents there, whom he did not know, that he was wanted by police, police said.

The residents called 911, and the soldier was taken into custody without incident.
