Man firing gun prompts closure on SR 512 in Puyallup

A 35-year-old suspected drunken driver crashed his truck in Puyallup and fled Thursday, firing a gun in a wooded area and prompting the closure of eastbound state Route 512 near Canyon Road, police said.

Officers found the wrecked truck about 5:50 a.m. in the 1300 block of 39th Avenue Southwest. Witnesses reported the driver fired a gun several times as he got out of the truck.

Officers said they heard one gunshot from a wooded area he ran to after the crash.

As a safety precaution, all eastbound lanes of state Route 512 were shut down for about two hours.

The Puyallup School District Transportation Services Building was placed on lockdown, which delayed buses being sent out to pick up students.

A SWAT team, assisted by a helicopter and a Pierce County sheriff’s search dog, found the alleged gunman hiding in brush about 7:40 a.m. and took him into custody.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

No one was hurt other the man was hurt in the incident. He was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. He was expected to be booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence and reckless discharge of a firearm.
