Teen accused of fatally shooting friend near JBLM charged as adult

A 17-year-old boy suspected of accidentally shooting his friend in the face on Joint Base Lewis-McChord this fall was charged as an adult Monday with second-degree manslaughter and illegal possession of a firearm.

Pierce County Superior Court Judge Thomas Larkin ordered Adonis L. Brown, who pleaded not guilty, jailed in lieu of $1 million bail.

Alexander Demello, 13, was shot Oct. 20 as he, Brown and Demello’s older brother were walking in a wooded area of the base, court records show.

The victim’s brother said he heard a gunshot, looked back and saw his brother on the ground and Brown holding a gun, the records show. Demello died days later.

Brown later told investigators he and the victim were passing the gun back and forth and that it discharged when Brown “fidgeted with it,” court records show.
