Auburn police car with rifle stolen from city parking lot

A police SUV stolen from an Auburn city parking lot with a loaded rifle inside was found Monday outside a Mercer Island home.

The vehicle was taken about 6:30 p.m. Sunday from a fenced parking lot. The thief drove off in the marked police car, causing minor damage to a gate as the SUV headed north on Interstate 5 near Federal Way.

A loaded rifle was inside a locked compartment, the department said.

The SUV was a black and white 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe with police lights on top, an Auburn police logo on the sides and license plate 2815D.

Local agencies had been on the lookout for the SUV until it was found about 8:30 a.m. Monday and towed back to Auburn. The rifle was untouched.
