Sumner High student suspected of trying to sell gun at school

A 15-year-old student at Sumner High School was charged Tuesday after allegedly bringing an unloaded handgun to campus in hopes of selling it.

Another student who saw the weapon reported it to teachers about 11:10 a.m. Jan. 5. The teen was booked into Remann Hall juvenile detention center and charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.

School officials said they do not believe the teenager intended to hurt anyone since the .38-caliber revolver was unloaded and he did not have ammunition.

“I want to make that point clear to everyone in our community, there was not a threat made to anyone,” Principal Bill Gaines wrote in a letter that was sent to parents.

Police believe the student took the gun from home without parental permission. It was found in his coat pocket.
