Kent school target of arson

An elementary school in Kent was damaged early Monday after somebody broke in and started a fire, according to the fire department.

A fire alarm and an intruder alarm summoned firefighters and police about 2:45 a.m. to Horizon Elementary School in the 27600 block of 144th Avenue East.

A window was broken and a classroom was burning.

Crews quickly extinguished the blaze and discovered that someone lit paper on a bookshelf holding children’s artwork, Capt. Kyle Ohashi said.

It is unknown who started the fire.

The school was not open Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The school is expected to reopen Tuesday, the district said.
