Man shot to death outside Ashford bar
A man was fatally shot outside an Ashford bar late Sunday during a fight about a woman, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said Monday.
Paul Hewlett, 50, died from multiple gunshot wounds, the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Deputies arrested the gunman at his Eatonville home early Monday after he called to turn himself in.
Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said the two men went to a bar in the 30300 block of state Route 706.
Investigators are trying to determine what led to a 11:30 p.m. scuffle in the parking lot. It appeared the fight was over a woman who works at the bar.
Hewlett, also from Eatonville, used to date the woman, who Sunday accused him of stalking her. The other man, 32, confronted the him in the parking lot after the bar closed and “the two guys ended up fighting over the girl,” Troyer said.
It is unclear if the younger man was romantically involved with the woman.
During the argument, the younger man allegedly shot Hewlett before fleeing.
Hewlett was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, where he died about 2 a.m.
Detectives recovered a handgun believed used in the shooting.
