16-year-old Federal Way youth killed in Saturday night shooting
A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot Saturday night in a restaurant parking lot in Federal Way, according to a press release from the Federal Way Police Department.
The release gave this account:
Just after 8 p.m. Saturday officers responded to sounds of gunshots near the intersection of Southwest Campus Drive and 21st Avenue Southwest.
A victim with fatal gunshot wounds was found inside a vehicle in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant. He was later identified as Wesley D. Gennings, 16, of Federal Way. He was a sophomore at Decatur High School in Federal Way.
Two male suspects, who were inside the vehicle with the victim, were seen leaving the area on foot, police said. The suspects were described as being in their late teens or early 20s and wearing dark clothing.
Gennings kept good grades in his classes, including demanding ones such as Advanced Placement World History, Federal Way Public Schools said in a release.
He played football for three years at Saghalie Middle School in Federal Way, sat out most of his freshman year due to injury, and this year he both played football and wrestled.
“His goal was to play football in college and eventually have a chance at the NFL,” Decatur Athletic Director Korey Sites said in the statement.
Grief counselors will be available when students return to school Wednesday.
