Tacoma police identify officers involved in fatal shooting of woman

Tacoma police on Friday identified two officers involved in a fatal shooting of a woman Jan. 28.

Officer Scott Campbell, 30, who opened fire on Jacqueline D. Salyers as she allegedly drove at him, has been on the force for two years and has been in law enforcement for eight years.

His 33-year-old partner, Aaron Joseph, has been with the Tacoma Police Department for 10 years.

Both men were placed on paid administrative leave after the shooting, which is standard procedure. They have since returned to work.

Kenneth Wright was the reason Campbell and Joseph approached him and Salyers that night as the couple sat in a car in the 3300 block of South Sawyer Street.

Wright, 32, had two outstanding warrants for first-degree robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance. He made threats against the officers and was considered armed and dangerous, police said.

When officers spotted him sitting in the passenger seat about 11:30 p.m., they got out of their patrol car and began walking toward Wright and Salyers.

Salyers, who was behind the wheel, hit the gas pedal and drove directly at the officers, police have said.

Salyers was shot at least once and died at the scene. Wright got out of the car, armed with a rifle, and ran.

A SWAT team spent six hours conducting a yard-to-yard search in the neighborhood but were unable to find Wright.

Jennie Reed Elementary School closed the next day because school officials feared the armed felon was still in the area. The school is about three blocks from where the shooting took place.

Wright was arrested Sunday at a Tacoma home. He is being held on a combined $2,500,000 bail in connection with three criminal cases and faces life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.
