One killed overnight on Interstate 5 near Fife

A 19-year-old man is dead after the car he was a passenger in struck a power pole on Interstate 5 near the Port of Tacoma off ramp overnight.

Elias J. Solis of Roslyn was killed when the 2007 Lexus ES he was riding in crashed just before 12:30 a.m.

The car’s driver, a 25-year-old from Tacoma, was heading north on I-5 when he tried to take the exit to the Port of Tacoma. He lost control of the car and hit a wooden utility pole, according to a Washington State Patrol report.

Other passengers included a 26-year-old man and 25-year-old man, both from Tacoma.

The 26-year old was taken to Madigan Army Medical Center. The driver and 25-year-old were taken to Tacoma General Hospital.

Everyone was wearing their seat belts except the driver.

The State Patrol is investigating, and believes drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
