Two charged in Tacoma shooting; victim shot in head in critical condition

Tacoma police are still trying to sort out a shootout that critically wounded a 24-year-old man and included up to 50 gunshots.

The victim, who was found lying on the ground near East 35th and East L streets, remains at St. Joseph Medical Center after being shot in the head. He is not expected to survive.

Police were called to the area about 3:45 a.m. Saturday and discovered multiple shooters had fired 30 to 50 shots and a large crowd remained in the street.

It’s unknown what prompted the shooting.

Shortly afterward, officers found a Dodge Avenger stopped at a nearby intersection with steam coming from the engine, a flat tire and 12 bullet holes in the vehicle.

Jennifer Boyd, 21, was behind the wheel. Her boyfriend, Andre Stewart, 23, was in the passenger seat.

Stewart told police they left a party after a shooting happened. He claimed people opened fire on them so he shot back, according to court documents.

Stewart had a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson tucked in his waistband, records show.

He is barred from having a weapon due to a prior conviction for residential burglary.

On Monday, Pierce County prosecutors charged Boyd and Stewart with drive-by shooting. Stewart was also charged with first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.

More charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
