Eatonville man huffs canned air, passes out, wrecks car, injures girlfriend, documents say

An Eatonville man took his girlfriend and a friend out for a joyride Tuesday night in Spanaway after stopping to buy two cans of whipped cream and a can of compressed air.

The driver and his girlfriend were repeatedly inhaling the compressed gas to get high, but he blacked out, according to court records.

His accelerating SUV, going south on state Route 7 near Weiler Road, veered into the northbound lanes, left the road, hit a guard rail, went over an embankment, cartwheeled once and landed nose-down at a 90-degree angle.

The girlfriend broke several vertebrae and her jaw and suffered severe facial lacerations, documents said. All three people in the vehicle were wearing seat belts.

The driver, Jarrid Witko Roberts, 30, was arraigned Thursday on vehicular assault charges in Pierce County Superior Court. Court Commissioner Meagan Foley set his bail at $150,000.

The Washington State Patrol arrested Roberts at an area hospital, where he was taken after complaining of back pain, according to the documents.
