West Pierce Fire and Rescue responded to a house fire Saturday afternoon in Lakewood off Bridgeport Way.

People at the one-story home on the 10000 block of Occident Street SW were able to get out before crews arrived. They also were able to rescue a cat and two turtles that were inside, said West Pierce Battalion Chief Scott Adams.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The residents said it started outside, but Adams said that is to be determined. He estimated damage around $200,000.

Fire crews were able to put the fire out quickly, but dealt with hot spots flaring up in the attic space, Adams said.

Lakewood Police also responded to help with traffic control.
