Tacoma Public Schools on Wednesday morning experienced alarm glitching at multiple campuses across the district.

“‘You need to vacate the premises. The police have been dispatched’ playing on repeat outside Mason,” the X account @northtacoma wrote Wednesday morning. “We have been assured everything is fine.”

Mason Middle School is located at 3901 N. 28th St. in Tacoma’s Proctor District.

Kathryn McCarthy, a spokesperson for Tacoma Public Schools, told The News Tribune that the district grappled with alarm-system problems in multiple schools Wednesday morning. As of publication, it was unclear which other schools besides Mason had issues, she said.

“We have a centralized alarm system for the district, and certain buildings were having issues where the alarm wasn’t able to disarm and was making announcements,” McCarthy said. “So we’re working with a vendor to correct it, and Mason was one of those schools.”

McCarthy said the affected schools have communicated with families and staff directly to let them know about the glitch. The district “has a temporary fix” and is working with the vendor to prevent it from happening again, she added.
