South Sound kids in need can receive free backpacks and supplies

If there’s one signal that summer is almost over, it’s the appearance of retail displays of pencils, glue sticks, crayons and other school supplies that will soon be filling kids’ backpacks.

But for families on tight budgets, those supplies may be out of reach. So each summer, churches and community organizations come together to distribute free backpacks and supplies to kids in need. Some make the events a festive affair with fun activities, food and music. Others offer haircuts or dental screenings.

Here’s a list of some events coming up in Tacoma and other large Pierce County school districts:

FRANKLIN PIERCE SCHOOL DISTRICT

When: Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Where: Our Savior Lutheran Church, 4519 112th St. E., Tacoma

Open to: Franklin Pierce students in need.

What’s available: School supplies.

PUYALLUP SCHOOL DISTRICT

When: Monday-Thursday , 1-3 p.m.

Where: All Saints School cafeteria, 504 Second St. SW, Puyallup.

Open to: Any Puyallup district student in need. Proof of registration in a Puyallup School District school or a local address is required.

What’s available: School supplies.


 

When: Aug. 22, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Where: Mountain View Community Center, 3607 122nd Ave. E., Edgewood.

Open to: Any Puyallup district student in need. Students must be present to receive supplies. Parents are asked to bring a copy of their child’s immunization record.

What’s available: Backpacks and supplies, face-painting, a barbecue lunch, music and other activities.


 

When: Aug 29, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Where: Puyallup Foursquare Church North Campus, 601 Ninth Ave. SE, Puyallup.

Open to: Any Puyallup district student in need. Students must be present to receive supplies.

Parents are asked to bring a copy of their child’s immunization record.

What’s available: Backpacks and supplies, haircuts, dental screenings, immunizations, food and entertainment.


 

When: Aug. 28, 6-8:30 p.m.

Where: Puyallup Nazarene Church, 1026 Seventh Ave. SW, Puyallup.

Open to: Students from Maplewood, Spinning and Stewart elementary

schools.

What’s available: Backpacks and supplies, clothing, dental checks, hot dogs, children’s games.

TACOMA SCHOOL DISTRICT

When: Aug. 29, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Where: Life Center Central, 1717 Union Ave., Tacoma.

Open to: Students from McCarver, Stanley, Jefferson, Skyline, Northeast Tacoma, Downing, Franklin, Grant, Point Defiance, Whittier, Lowell, DeLong, Browns Point, Geiger Montessori, Sherman, Meeker and Crescent Heights elementary schools; Jason Lee, Mason, Stewart and Truman middle schools; Foss, Stadium, Oakland and Wilson high schools, SOTA and SAMI.

What’s available: Backpacks and supplies, sweet treats, face-painting, games, food.


 

When: Aug. 29, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.

Where: Giaudrone Middle School, 4902 S. Alaska St., Tacoma.

Open to: Students from Arlington, Birney, Edison, Fern Hill, Mann, Larchmont, Manitou Park, Stafford, Reed and Whitman elementary schools; Baker, Giaudrone and Gray middle schools; Mount Tahoma High School.

What’s available: School supplies for the first 2,000 students; haircuts, games, face painting, dental screening, sports physicals, hot dogs and snacks for the first 2,000 students and their parents.


 

When: 1:30 p.m. Aug. 30

Where: William Philip Hall, 1918 Pacific Ave., Tacoma

Open to: Students from Blix, Browns Point, Boze, Fawcett, Roosevelt, Meeker and Northeast Tacoma elementary schools

What’s available: Backpacks and supplies, sweet treats, face-painting, games.


 

When: Aug. 30, 1-5 p.m.

Where: Baker Middle School, 8001 S. J St., Tacoma.

Open to: Students from Arlington, Birney, Edison, Fawcett, Fern Hill, Larchmont, Lister, Lyon, Mann, Manitou Park, Sheridan and Stafford elementary schools; Stewart, Baker, First Creek, Giaudrone and Gray middle schools; Lincoln High School.

What’s available: Backpacks and supplies, sweet treats, face-painting, games.

CLOVER PARK SCHOOL DISTRICT

When: Aug. 30, noon-2 p.m.

Where: Clover Park High School, 11023 Gravelly Lake Dr. SW, Lakewood.

Open to: Students in need.
