National education expert speaks Tuesday at Chief Leschi Schools

Chief Leschi Schools and the Puyallup School District are sponsoring a public talk Tuesday (Oct. 6) by Pedro Noguera, a UCLA professor of education who will address issues of equity and closing opportunity gaps in education.

The sociologist and author 11 books, including “Excellence Through Equity,” is visiting the area in conjunction with a two-day Pave the Way conference at the Tacoma Convention Center, which began Monday and continues Tuesday. The conference focuses on ways to support traditionally underserved students.

Noguera’s research looks at ways in which schools are influenced by social and economic conditions, as well as demographic trends. He is a frequent commentator on CNN, MSNBC, National Public Radio and other news outlets.

His public talk will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Four Seasons Building at Chief Leschi, 5625 52nd St. E., Puyallup.
