Nearly 30 third- through fifth-graders at Dower Elementary in Lakewood are participating in a science extended-day program.

Students are asked to follow the engineering design process which is to Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create and Improve. Students used this process to create a 10-inch high platform sturdy enough to support a stuffed animal.

“By using this process, we hope students start to think differently about science,” Dower teacher Jeff Wilson said. “It’s more than just experiments; it’s about critical thinking.”

Principal Jennifer Moore said one goal is to increase students’ love of science. Another is to encourage students to participate in this year’s STEM Fair.

Dower’s program runs every Tuesday and Thursday through the end of February and is funded through a Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) grant.
