Local schools earn School of Distinction awards

Several local schools are being recognized with 2015 School of Distinction awards. They go to the schools in Washington that have sustained improvement over five years in reading/English/language arts, math and graduation rates.

The local schools recognized are Carter Lake Elementary, Evergreen Elementary, Harrison Prep, Tillicum Elementary, and Mann and Woodbrook middle schools, all in Clover Park School District; Technology Access Foundation Academy in Federal Way; Geiger Montessori, Stafford Elementary, Lincoln High and Wilson High in Tacoma.

The rankings are compiled by the Center for Education Effectiveness. The center partners with the Association of Education Service Districts, the Association of Washington School Principals, Washington Association of School Administrators, and the Washington Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Hosts sought for Chinese students coming to Tacoma

The Tacoma International Education & Business Alliance, in partnership with Tower Bridge International, is searching for host families for an estimated 70 Chinese high school and middle school students expected to arrive in Tacoma in February. They plan to attend Tacoma Public Schools.

Host families receive about $30 a day in compensation, and the student visits are expected to last 28 days. All adults in the household have to pass a criminal background check.
