Early learning fair scheduled at Tom Taylor YMCA
The Peninsula Early Learning Coalition will host an Early Learning Jamboree and Kindergarten Fair from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the Tom Taylor Family YMCA in Gig Harbor.
The event will provide a variety of information about preschools, day cares, kindergarten programs and enrichment experiences available in the Gig Harbor area. Resources such as a pediatric clinic, Children’s Home Society and Community in Schools will also be present. For information, go to www.facebook. com/peninsulalc.
SOAR Academy accepting fall applications
SOAR Academy in Tacoma is accepting applications for kindergarten and any vacant first- and second-grade openings for the fall of 2016.
The academy, located at 2136 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, is a free public school for K-8 students that offers a longer school year and extended school days. The application deadline is March 31. Literacy on the Hilltop program at Tacoma library
A free community event, Literacy on the Hilltop, will be at the Tacoma Public Library, 1101 Tacoma Ave. S., from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.
The program highlights family literacy resources, after-school learning, free library programs and resources.
There will be face painting, craft activities, snacks, a young poetry workshop, storytelling and animation/digital design demonstrations. Gloria Burgess will be the keynote speaker, sharing the heritage of spirituals and poetry from the African American tradition. For information, call 253-292-2001.
Graham youth earns research award
Anthony Clendenen of Graham recently was awarded the CTY Cogito Research Award for his proposal “Safety Sensor Array for Flood Water.” The homeschooler plans to design and build a sensory device for emergency vehicles that will measure the speed and depth of flood waters and detect large debris.
Ten winners were selected in the competition for demonstrating initiative, creativity and promise in their STEM research project.
There were more than 250 student applications. Clendenen will receive a $499 grant and guidance from a mentor to develop his idea.
Congressional art contest needs school entries
U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer is inviting high school students from the 6th Congressional District to participate in the 2016 Congressional Art Competition, a nationwide contest that recognizes and encourages artistic talent. The winning artist will have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year and be awarded a trip for two to Washington, D.C.
Entries must be original in concept, design and execution, and can not violate copyright laws. They must be received by April 18 and can be sent to either of Kilmer’s district offices: 950 Pacific Ave. Suite 1230, Tacoma or 345 Sixth St., Suite 500, Bremerton.
