Steilacoom alters school board meeting format

The Steilacoom Historical School District Board has changed its meeting format schedule effective with the Wednesday, March 9 meeting. The first meeting of the month will be a working session to collect and study information; no decisions will be made. These meeting will include time for public comment. The second meeting of the month will have a full agenda, including public comment and decision-making actions. For a complete schedule of meetings, go to the district’s website.

Family and community academy at Jason Lee Middle School

Tacoma Public Schools is sponsoring a Family & Community Learning Academy from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturda,y March 12 at Jason Lee Middle School, 602 N. Sprague Ave., Tacoma.

The event will feature a keynote address by Jahmad Canley on the importance of culture and education, free family photos, face painting for kids, a session on family and financial literacy, a titled “Parenting for the Launch” class on raising teenagers, training on how to start a student book club, and information in English and Spanish on preparation for college and more. There will be a free deli lunch and drawings for door prizes.

After the event, there will be a screening of the documentary, “Paper Tigers.” You can view the trailer for the film here: www.papertigersmovie.com.

Bellarmine students in ‘The Tempest’

Bellarmine Preparatory School’s drama department will perform William Shakespeare's play "The Tempest" March 10 through 13 in the theater on Bellarmine's campus, 2300 S. Washington St., Tacoma.

Drama Director Gabe McPherson composed an original score for Bellarmine's take on this classic play about the sorcerer Prospero, Duke of Milan, who plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skillful manipulation.

Spanaway Middle School earns state STEM honor

Spanaway Middle School was one of five schools and one district selected as a Lighthouse School by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. These schools will serve as mentors to other schools and will receive a $20,000 grant that will help promote and develop STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education, including technical assistance and advice for schools creating their own STEM environments. The schools and district were selected as resources and examples for best practices in STEM education.

Students win D.A.R. history essay contest

The Elizabeth Forey Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently named winners of the American history essay contest it sponsors. Samuel Abraham, Truman Middle School, is the sixth-grade winner; Ukeweli Mentee Dennis , Annie Wright School, is the seventh-grade winner; and Carson McKee, Annie Wright School, is the eighth-grade winner. A total of 73 students submitted essays in the contest from the Tacoma School District. Winners will compete in the state and Northwest division and national awards.

Tacoma named College Board honor roll district

The Tacoma School District was one of five districts in Washington and 130 in the country to be placed on the College Board’s Gaston Caperton Opportunity Honor Roll. The distinction recognizes districts for creating opportunities for traditionally underrepresented students by demonstrating significant consistent growth in the number of underrepresented students and students from lower-income backgrounds participating in AP, taking the SAT and applying to four or more colleges.

Local students serve as legislative pages

During the current legislative session in Olympia, local students have been serving as pages in the House of Representatives and Senate. They perform a variety of responsibilities and they receive daily civics instruction, draft bills and participate in mock committee hearings. The following students recently served as pages:

Brianna Door, Emerald Ridge High School, sponsored by Rep. Laurie Jinkins (D-Tacoma), and Cely Delgado, Lincoln High School, sponsored by Rep. Jake Fey (D-Tacoma).
