Ramp and lane closures galore slated for Interstate 5, state Route 410
Drivers traveling overnight through Tacoma on Interstate 5 this week might encounter delays as construction crews restrict lanes and close ramps to continue working on the carpool expansion project.
Traffic also will be restricted around Portland Avenue and East 28th Street for most of the week, and work on an expansion joint on state Route 410 near Sumner will require ramp closures there.
Here’s the rundown from the state State Department of Transportation:
Interstate 5 lane restrictions
Monday through Wednesday: Northbound I-5 near South 38th Street will be routed onto the parallel collector-distributor lanes and detoured via either state Route 7 or Interstate 705 from midnight to 4 a.m.
Thursday through Saturday: Southbound I-5 will be detoured via exit 133 to Tacoma city center or I-705 from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m.
Additional lane closures should be expected in both directions between South M Street and Port of Tacoma Road and restrictions overnight Wednesday near South 48th Street.
I-5 ramp closures
Monday: The on-ramp from state Route 7 to northbound I-5 will close from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday. Also, the exit from northbound I-5 to Portland Avenue will close from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday.
Tuesday: The on-ramp from state Route 7 to northbound I-5 will close at 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Wednesday. Also, the exit from southbound I-5 to East 27th Street will close from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday.
Wednesday: The on-ramp from Bay Street to northbound state Route 167 will close from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Thursday.
East 28th Street and Portland Avenue
Tuesday: East 28th Street between Portland Avenue and Bay Street will close from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday.
Wednesday: East 28th Street between Portland and Bay Street will close from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday. Also, the Bay Street on-ramp to northbound state Route 167 will be closed.
Saturday: The intersection of Portland Avenue and East 28th Street will close from 12:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also, the exit from northbound I-5 to Portland Avenue will be closed.
The intersection of East Bay Street and East 28th Street will close from 10 p.m. to noon Sunday, and the on-ramp from 28th Street to northbound I-5 will be closed as will access from southbound I-5 and Bay Street to northbound state Route 167.
State Route 410
The westbound on-ramp from state Route 410 to northbound state Route 167 will close each night, Monday to Saturday. The closure will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.
A detour will be provided.
