Traffic collision on northbound I-5 in Federal Way causes six-mile backup

Drivers going north on Interstate 5 should expect some delays Monday morning. A traffic collision in Federal Way blocked two lanes of traffic, causing a six-mile backup.

The collision was cleared by about 7:20 a.m., according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. WSDOT asked drivers to be patient as the backup cleared out.

The collision was reported at about 5:50 a.m. near South 272nd Street in Federal Way, according to WSDOT. The incident blocked the HOV lane and left lane. By about 7 a.m., backups reached the King-Pierce county line.

The severity of the collision isn’t clear. Emergency crews were on the scene of the incident.

WSDOT said traffic delays on northbound I-5 were also a result of travelers heading toward state Route 18.
