Man fatally struck by car while crossing Tacoma street Monday night

A man was struck and killed by a car Monday night in Tacoma. Police said the man was crossing a street in the middle of the block when he was hit.

The incident was reported about 9:50 p.m. in the 8800 block of Pacific Avenue South, Tacoma Police Department spokesperson Wendy Haddow said. The 66-year-old man killed in the collision has not been identified.

The 53-year-old driver who struck the man was going north on Pacific Avenue South in the rightmost lane of traffic, Haddow said. She said a bus was stopped ahead of the driver at a bus stop, and the man changed lanes to get around it. At the same time, the 66-year-old man crossed the street in front of the bus.

The older man was struck by the driver, who stopped his car after hitting him. Haddow said there were no signs of intoxication in the driver.

“He was all in dark clothing,” Haddow said. “Just couldn’t see him.”

Haddow said the collision investigation team responded to the scene. No arrests have been made.
