Traffic collision on northbound I-5 in Pierce County causes backups Tuesday morning

Commuters driving north from the Tacoma area on Tuesday morning likely ran into significant traffic delays due to a collision on Interstate 5 that blocked various lanes, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

About 6:30 a.m., the drive time from Tacoma to Seattle was estimated to be two hours, according to KIRO Newsradio Traffic. WSDOT said the collision was reported at 5:15 a.m. just north of state Route 516 in Kent. At 6 a.m., it was causing a six-mile backup.

All lanes were reopened by 6:55 a.m., but WSDOT warned it could take some time for the traffic congestion to clear.

WSDOT did not share details of the collision. No injuries were reported.

The traffic on Interstate 5 also led to delays on nearby roads, slowing down traffic on northbound state Route 167 from Puyallup. KIRO Newsradio Traffic reported that it also caused backups from Fife to the state Route 18 off-ramp as drivers tried to divert.
