Vehicle struck Bethel School District building in fatal Spanaway collision, deputies say
Pierce County deputies were investigating Tuesday morning after a vehicle rear-ended a pickup truck, then struck a Bethel School District building in Spanaway. Deputies said one person in the vehicle that caused the collision was killed and three people were injured.
Pierce County Sheriff’s Department deputies said one truck “tapped” the side of an office building for the school district. It did not appear to have caused much damage.
The collision occurred at about 9:03 a.m. in the 500 block of 176th Street East, according to Pierce County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies said no one inside the building was injured. The road was closed between B Street East and 6th Avenue while deputies and first responders were on the scene. Drivers were advised to use alternate routes.
The person killed in the collision has not been publicly identified.
Sheriff’s spokesperson Sgt. Darren Moss said the two vehicles were westbound when a green truck struck the back of a white truck at a high speed, pushing the white truck off the road, into a pole and a fence. He said the green truck then went off the road to the south, where it hit the school district building.
Both vehicles had two occupants. Moss said the person killed was a passenger in the green pickup truck. The driver of that vehicle was transported to an area hospital. He said the occupants of the white truck were injured but not taken to a hospital.
