Southbound I-5 traffic backed up in Tacoma after 4-vehicle collision involving semi
Traffic was backed up for miles Wednesday morning on southbound Interstate 5 near downtown Tacoma after three cars and a semi truck were involved in a collision that overturned the truck, according to transportation officials.
Five lanes of southbound traffic remained blocked just before 9 a.m., and backups stretched 3-4 miles into Fife, the Washington State Department of Transportation said on Twitter. It occurred just south of the Interstate 705 interchange, near South Yakima Avenue.
No one was seriously hurt, Washington State Patrol Trooper Robert Reyer said. He said a man driving the semi truck suffered minor injuries, but he wasn’t transported to a hospital.
By about 9:15 a.m., two right lanes were open to traffic. In a tweet, WSDOT said tow trucks still needed to clear wreckage. Tacoma Fire Department personnel, WSDOT crews, tow trucks and state troopers responded.
It’s not yet clear how the crash occurred, Reyer said. The incident was reported at about 8:15 a.m.
