Fire at Tacoma business leads to closure of busy road across Tideflats on Thursday

Traffic from state Route 509 to Marine View Drive in Tacoma was diverted Thursday morning due to a fire that is now under control.

The fire was at Manke Lumber Co. where some equipment caught on fire at 6:45 a.m. Tacoma Fire crews were on the scene and working on hot spots. The fire was minor and there were no injuries or significant damage, said Joe Meinecke, spokesperson for Tacoma Fire.

Tacoma Fire asked Washington State Patrol to shut down the northbound and southbound lanes of state Route 509, which lies next to Commencement Bay. Northbound traffic was diverted to Alexander Avenue and southbound traffic was diverted to Norpoint Way North East, said Washington State Patrol.

State Route 509 was reopened at 9:38 a.m., according to Washington State Patrol on X.
