Traffic on southbound Interstate 5 into Tacoma is backed up to state Route 18 in Federal Way early Monday evening after a crash near Pacific Avenue.

Those involved in the crash were unable to pull their vehicles to the side, said Washington State Patrol trooper John Dattilo. The crash was cleared about 5 p.m. but the after effects mixed with commuter traffic is making for a miles-long backup.

Motorists who finally exit I-5 onto westbound state Route 16 won’t get any relief. Traffic on that route over the Narrows Bridge is stop and go as well. Emergency repairs have necessitated a closure of two lanes, The News Tribune earlier reported.
