Traveling through Fife on I-5? Plan ahead for these closures in September and October
Part of I-5 between Federal Way and Tacoma will close overnight on four Friday and four Saturday nights between Sept. 27 and Oct. 19.
Both directions of the freeway between state Route 18 and 54th Avenue East will close to allow crews to set girders for a new bridge and demolish an existing bridge at 70th Avenue, according to WSDOT.
The dates of the closures are Sept. 27, 28; Oct. 4, 5; Oct. 11, 12 and Oct. 18, 19. The times are as follows:
- Friday night: Lanes begin closing at 7 p.m. All northbound lanes closed by 10:30 p.m. All southbound lanes closed by 11 p.m.
- Saturday morning: Lanes begin reopening at 7 a.m. All lanes open by 11 a.m.
- Saturday night: Same as Friday night.
- Sunday morning: Lanes begin reopening at 8 a.m. All lanes open by noon.
There will also be ramp closures between state Route 18 and Port of Tacoma Road.
The new bridge will eventually carry the new SR 167 expressway over I-5 at the Fife curve and is part of WSDOT’s SR 167 Completion Project in Pierce County. The project will add 6 miles of tolled highway between Puyallup and the Port of Tacoma and include sidewalks and paths for pedestrians and bikers.
