Traffic is stop-and-go on state Route 16 after collision just across Narrows Bridge
Traffic is stop-and-go for over eight miles leading up to and across the Tacoma Narrows bridge toward Gig Harbor on Thursday evening, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
A multi-vehicle collision near 24th Street Northwest blocked two right lanes on westbound state Route 16 at 4:14 p.m., WSDOT posted on X earlier today. The wall of cars begins around milepost 1.0 on the highway and ends near the site of the collision at milepost 8.87, the WSDOT real-time travel map showed at around 5:15 p.m.
Washington State Patrol spokesperson John Dattilo said at least four cars were involved in the crash. He told The News Tribune via phone at 5:15 p.m. that the involved cars have been moved off to the shoulder but a trooper and a Department of Transportation unit are still blocking the merging lane coming from the on-ramp to state Route 16 at 24th Street Northwest.
There were no injuries, but one driver is under arrest on suspicion of a DUI, he said.
Asked when the traffic may clear, Dattilo said he imagines they’re waiting for tow trucks to clear the vehicles, which would be the soonest that state transportation and patrol troopers can clear out.
