Both directions of 84th Street South in Lakewood were closed to traffic following a fatal vehicle collision, West Pierce Fire & Rescue posted on X at 1:23 p.m. Wednesday.

The closure extended between Steilacoom Boulevard and I-5, according to the post.

Lakewood Police reported that 84th Street South was closed between Pine Street South and South Tacoma Way in a post on X at 1:22 p.m. The accident was a serious-injury car vs. motorcycle collision.

First responders were on scene, and drivers were advised to avoid the area and take alternate routes such as 72nd Street or 96th Street, the post from Lakewood Police said.

Lakewood Police Sgt. Charles Porche told The News Tribune via phone at about 3:30 p.m. that the motorcyclist died in the crash at 84th Street South and Pine Street South.

Police received the call just before 1 p.m. and heard there was a motorcycle on fire, he said. He heard that first responders were performing CPR on the motorcyclist. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to the hospital but did not appear to have serious injuries, according to Porche.

The vehicle was traveling east on 84th Street South and making a left turn to go north when the crash occurred with the motorcycle, which was traveling west, Porche told The News Tribune.

“It’s possible that speed was a factor in all of this,” Porche said. “But we are still going to have to do some additional follow-up to determine whether or not (that occurred).”
