A major injury wreck in Pierce County has caused a roadway to shut down early Wednesday morning.

All southbound lanes of Canyon Road East are closed from 143rd Street East, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department on X.

Video shows a white car and black truck, both with extensive damage, on the roadway. Both vehicles had one occupant, which were the drivers, Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Carly Cappetto told The News Tribune.

The black truck caught on fire after the rollover crash. A bystander was able to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher and helped the male driver out of the truck, Cappetto said.

The white Honda’s driver had to be extricated by emergency personnel.

The drivers were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries, Cappetto said. Deputies are continuing to investigate, and the roadway will be shut down for some time.

The Sheriff’s Department will post updates on road openings.

This is a developing story, check back for more updates.
