Updated: Crash blocking 3 lanes of I-5 in Pierce County on Friday afternoon now cleared

Update, 4:34 p.m.: All lanes are reopened.

Update, 4:12 p.m.: Two lanes have reopened, but the backup is four miles long and is expected to linger for some time, WSDOT reports.

Original post: A four-car collision on Interstate 5 near DuPont in southwestern Pierce County is blocking three northbound lanes Friday afternoon.

The crash occurred about 2:50 p.m. near Center Drive, WSDOT reported on X.

Traffic was getting by on the right shoulder about 3:30 p.m.

“Expect congestion and delays on NB I-5 approaching the JBLM gates until we’re able to clear the scene,” WSDOT reported.
