Busy Pierce County road to be closed this weekend for roundabout construction
A busy section of Steilacoom-DuPont Road near Barksdale Station in DuPont will be closed to drivers starting at 7 p.m. Friday, May 2, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Work crews will close Steilacoom-DuPont Road to all traffic between Pendleton Avenue and Station Drive to connect a new roundabout to Steilacoom-DuPont Road, according to WSDOT. The road will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, May 5.
Drivers will be able to access businesses and hotels at Barksdale Station through the business park’s south entrance, and a signed detour will direct travelers from Interstate 5 to take Wilmington Drive to Center Drive, WSDOT said. Travelers coming from Steilacoom will first detour from Steilacoom-DuPont Road to Center Drive, then I-5.
Truck traffic will use Center Drive temporarily, WSDOT said. Once the road reopens, travelers will be able to use two sections of the roundabout north of Station Drive.
“Crews will fully open the roundabout once they complete the new I-5/Steilacoom-DuPont Road interchange and overpass. The new overpass is scheduled to open as a diverging diamond interchange in 2026,” said WSDOT in a news release April 22. “The work is part of the I-5 Mounts Road to Steilacoom-DuPont Road Corridor Improvements project.”
This road work is the third project in a series to widen I-5 and create new HOV lanes, according to WSDOT. The I-5 Mounts Road to Steilacoom-DuPont Road Corridor Improvements project will cost about $233.3 million, which comes from a $495 million fund approved by the Washington State Legislature in 2015 as part of the Connecting Washington transportation package.
