Man driving scooter dies after striking shopping cart at state Route 7 in Pierce County

A 42-year-old man reportedly died on northbound state Route 7 near Spanaway after his motorized scooter struck a shopping cart Tuesday morning.

The man was going north when he struck the abandoned shopping cart that was on the right shoulder, Washington State Patrol’s Trooper John Dattilo wrote on X. The crash was reported by the Washington State Department of Transportation at 10:07 a.m.

“Unfortunately, the man was unresponsive when first responders arrived, and despite their best efforts, has died,” Dattilo wrote.

The man, reportedly from Spanaway, was not wearing a helmet. He was riding a 2025 Apollo Scooter, according to a WSP press memo.

State Patrol along with fire personnel were on the scene near 197th Court East. Traffic was getting by in the center turn lane.

The crash cleared after two hours and 12 minutes, the release said.
