A crash involving a semi-truck is causing traffic backups on southbound Interstate 5 near Milton Friday morning.

Two right lanes are blocked near state Route 18 from the crash. Tows, medical aid, fire help, the incident response team and Washington State Patrol are on scene, the Washington State Department of Transportation Traffic account wrote on X.

Emergency responders first got the call around 3:30 a.m., according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson.

Johnson said the driver’s truck was carrying soda when they veered off the interstate and crashed 200 feet off the road. The driver suffered minor injuries. The crash also left a trail of soda off the shoulder of the highway.

The cause of the crash is not known, he said.

Two of the traffic lanes are blocked for recovery of the truck, which Johnson said will not be easy.

Drivers should expect an extended closure.
