Tacoma I-705 spur ramps to get revamped. Here’s what road closures look like

Maintenance for the on- and off-ramps on Interstate 705 began Monday in Tacoma in an effort to improve road conditions.

The ramps connect the highway to Commerce Street and South Stadium Way, according to a news release from the City of Tacoma. The city’s Public Works Department’s Engineering Division will perform the maintenance.

“Work will include installing a new cement concrete overlay on the ramp decks, replacing ramp deck expansion joints, and completing other necessary repairs and safety improvements. It will affect I-705 access ramps to and from Schuster Parkway,” the release said.

The project will cost about $5.4 million.

Here’s what closures look like

From I-705 to Stadium Way and Schuster Parkway, the northbound off-ramps will close from Aug. 11 to Sept. 14, the release said. The off-ramp to Schuster Parkway will be closed to drivers who are driving north.

From Stadium Way and Schuster Parkway to I-705, the southbound ramps will close from Sept. 15 to Oct. 19. The on-ramp to I-705 from Schuster Parkway will be closed, the release said.

The release said that the A Street City Center exit and the state Route 509 north, South 21st Street and Port of Tacoma exits will remain open.

“Each ramp will close for approximately 35 consecutive days, with detours provided. Once construction on one ramp is complete, the affected ramp will be reopened, and the closure of the other ramp will occur shortly after,” the release said.

Information on the detour routes are available on the city’s project website. More information on the maintence is also available on the website.
