Update: Multi-vehicle crash cleared on Interstate 5 near Tacoma Dome

A crash involving a vehicle and empty tanker truck has caused extended Interstate 5 lane closures Tuesday morning in Tacoma.

Two of the right lanes on southbound Interstate 5 near the Tacoma Dome are blocked due to the crash. Three left lanes are open, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation who reported the crash at 6:26 a.m.

A black sedan made a risky lane change and struck a pickup truck, This caused the truck to rotate into a semi-trailer, Washington State Patrol Trooper Kameron Watts wrote on X.

A vehicle is wedged beneath an empty tanker truck with minor injuries reported, according to WSDOT Tacoma.

“Special care is being taken to prevent spill of any potential remnants tanker was carrying,” the account wrote on X.

Drivers should expect longer than normal lane closures.

9 a.m. update: Three right lanes are blocked, according to WSDOT.

Update: The crash has cleared.
