Update: Wreck on southbound Interstate 5 in Pierce County cleared

Interstate 5 southbound near Lakewood is backed up for about five miles after a wreck Wednesday morning.

The two left lanes are blocked near New York Avenue Southwest, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation at 5:29 a.m.

State Patrol hopes to open the roadway in the next hour or two. Tow trucks are on the way to remove the vehicles involved in the wreck, Trooper Daniel Southard wrote on X.

The drivers of a pickup truck with a trailer and a car were to taken to local hospitals as a precaution, Southard told The News Tribune.

Southard said he could not provide information on what led to the crash as it is under investigation.

Update: This crash has cleared. Drivers should expect some delays as the remaining backup clears up, WSDOT Tacoma wrote on X.
