Person killed in 2-car crash on South Tacoma Way, police say

A two-vehicle collision Monday afternoon on South Tacoma Way left a passenger in one car dead, according to police. Two others were seriously injured.

The incident was reported at about 1:34 p.m. at 66th Street and South Tacoma Way. Tacoma Police Department Sgt. John Correa said a sedan occupied by two people and another sedan with one person inside were involved.

Correa said a female passenger died in the wreck. He did not have more details about the victim. Both drivers were taken to local hospitals.

It’s unclear how the incident occurred or whether drugs or alcohol were a factor. Correa said collision investigators went to the scene and to the hospital.

“There were conflicting statements from witnesses, so I don’t have confirmed details yet,” Correa said.

Tacoma police and the Tacoma Fire Department responded. Correa said Tacoma Public Works also went to the scene to check on a telephone pole.

South Tacoma Way was shut down in the area of the crash while investigators were on scene, according to Correa. It reopened about 4:40 p.m.
